South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks is asking for the public’s help after the head of a dead mountain goat was illegally removed in Spearfish Canyon. Officials say the carcass was found at the bottom of Bridal Veil Falls on the morning of April 8, but by the time a GFP biologist arrived, the animal’s head had already been taken.
Authorities emphasize the goat was not poached, but removing or possessing any part of a mountain goat without permission is still illegal under state law. Because mountain goats are classified as big game, violations can result in a Class 1 misdemeanor.
GFP says public assistance is crucial in protecting wildlife. Anyone with information or surveillance footage showing suspicious activity is urged to contact the Turn In Poachers hotline at 1-888-OVERBAG or submit a tip online. Callers may remain anonymous.
