South Dakota Class B high school baseball is seeing a few format changes this season as the sport continues to grow across the state.
The South Dakota High School Baseball Association has shifted from the long‑standing four‑region setup to a new district model. Each region is now split into two districts of five to six nearby teams. The top four teams in each district will advance to an eight‑team super‑regional.
The biggest change is how teams qualify for postseason play. Instead of being required to play every team in their region, schools now only need to play 12 games against Class B opponents. Officials say the move gives teams more scheduling flexibility, reduces long‑distance travel, and helps programs deal with unpredictable spring weather.
Teams can also add games later into the season, with the deadline extended to April 30.
Postseason play itself remains the same, with super‑regionals set for May 17th through the 20th, and the state tournament May 25th and 26th in Brookings.
