Rapid City police arrested a 19‑year‑old driver Friday afternoon after a high‑speed incident that began with a disturbance call and ended in a parking lot on Jackson Boulevard.
Just after 3:25 p.m., officers were searching for a vehicle involved in a reported disturbance when they spotted it speeding southbound on Mountain View Road. Police say the driver then ran a red light at Canyon Lake Road.
An officer activated lights and sirens, and the vehicle eventually pulled into a lot at 1029 Jackson Boulevard. Officers ordered the occupants out and detained the driver, identified as Nishawn Highhawk of Rapid City.
Police say they found an open alcohol container in the vehicle and noted a strong smell of alcohol coming from Highhawk. After a DUI investigation, officers determined he was too impaired to drive.
Highhawk was arrested on several charges, including DUI, Reckless Driving, Underage Consumption, Open Container, No Proof of Insurance, and Driving Without a Valid License.
He was taken to the Pennington County Jail.
