South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says two Sioux Falls Police detectives were justified in their use of force during a March 31 officer‑involved shooting. A Division of Criminal Investigation review found the suspect, 36‑year‑old Richard Olson Jr., pointed a weapon at detectives after refusing commands.
The incident began when the Violent Crimes Unit tried to arrest Olson on a federal warrant. Investigators say he first pointed a pistol at himself, then later aimed it at officers. Detectives fired but did not hit him. Olson tried to run, but a police K‑9 apprehended him. He was treated for minor injuries and taken into custody.
DCI says a firearm was recovered at the scene, and toxicology tests showed Olson had methamphetamine and amphetamine in his system. Jackley says the case highlights the role of K‑9 units in keeping communities safe. Charges are pending with the Minnehaha County State’s Attorney’s Office.
