South Dakota continues to make its mark on the national wrestling stage — and Spearfish’s Joel Martin is right in the middle of it. The National Wrestling Coaches Association has announced its USMC Battles Won High School Girls State Coaching Staffs of the Year, and South Dakota’s award‑winning group includes Martin as part of the state’s top assistant coaching staff.
The NWCA highlighted the staff’s leadership, athlete development, and the rapid growth of girls wrestling across the state. Martin, who has been instrumental in expanding opportunities for female wrestlers in Spearfish and beyond, was recognized alongside coaches from across South Dakota for helping elevate the sport’s competitive level and visibility.
In a separate announcement, the NWCA also named the Girls State Head Coaches of the Year, underscoring the statewide momentum behind girls wrestling as participation continues to surge.
Both national recognitions reflect the strength of South Dakota’s coaching community — and the growing impact of leaders like Spearfish’s Joel Martin, whose work is helping shape the next generation of athletes.
