Spearfish High School has hired Michael Yost as its new head boys’ basketball coach, according to an announcement from Spearfish High School Activities Director Dalton Wademan on May 11.
Yost replaces Ben Schultz, who will leave Spearfish to take over as head boys basketball coach at Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School for the 2026–27 season.
Yost has been part of the Spearfish boys’ basketball program for the past seven seasons, serving on the varsity coaching staff. During that time, he contributed to the program through scouting, game preparation, player development, and in-game adjustments. Before his time at the high school level, Yost spent four years coaching at Spearfish Middle School.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Yost works as a teacher at Spearfish High School. He currently serves as the Academic Life Skills teacher and will transition into the Alternative School teacher role beginning with the 2026–27 school year.
Wademan said Yost’s familiarity with the program, commitment to student-athletes, and long-standing involvement with Spearfish schools and the community were key factors in his selection to lead the Spartan boys’ basketball program.
