The Lead City Commission has approved changes aimed at improving hiring, but stopped short on others.
Commissioners unanimously approved a new residency policy requiring most city employees to live within 13 miles of Lead City Hall. The change allows workers to live in nearby communities like Spearfish, Sturgis, and Whitewood, while department heads must still live within city limits.
Officials say the update is designed to expand the hiring pool and address housing challenges.
However, the commission did not move forward with proposed changes to the city’s vacation policy, which would have increased benefits for long-term employees. The proposal failed after no motion was made to approve it.
Commissioner Rob Carr recused himself from the discussion due to a family employment connection.
