Police in Rapid City responded to reports of gunshots early Sunday morning at an apartment complex on Surfwood Drive. Officers were called to the 100th block just after 2:00 a.m., where multiple witnesses reported hearing shots fired.
While investigating the scene, officers spotted a male walking near the area. When police attempted to make contact, he refused to stop and entered a nearby apartment building. Officers followed and reported hearing the individual discard an item in the hallway.
The suspect, identified as a juvenile, was taken into custody. Police recovered a loaded pistol magazine missing several rounds. Nearby, officers contacted two females—one of whom was found carrying a handgun.
Authorities say the firearm matched the magazine in the juvenile’s possession and had been handed off to the female just before officers made contact. The gun was later confirmed to be stolen.
Both juveniles were detained and referred to the juvenile justice system. Police continue to investigate the incident.
