Spearfish Post 164 Senior Legion baseball returns home Friday for a Class A doubleheader against the Rapid City Post 320 Stars at Black Hills Power Sports Complex.
Post 164 enters the home opener still searching for its first win after opening the season 0-2, while the Stars arrive with momentum and a 12-5 overall record.
Rapid City has won six of its last 10 games and is coming off a narrow 8-7 loss to Post 22 at Pete Lien Memorial Field.
Spearfish will look for contributions from several young players early in the season. Luke Poling has shown versatility defensively, appearing at two positions, with second base serving as his primary spot in the field. Sean Sewell has also emerged as a key contributor both at the plate and on the mound. Sewell owns a .500 on-base percentage thanks in part to two walks and has induced three ground balls on six balls in play while pitching.
Offensively, Tucker Viessman has led Post 164 with a .533 OPS, including a .333 on-base percentage. Bray Bowar has logged a team-high three innings pitched, while Sewell has been reliable defensively at first base with seven total fielding chances.
Rapid City’s lineup has been powered by Ayden Byrd, whose 1.561 OPS leads the Stars. The right fielder has compiled a .672 on-base percentage along with an impressive .889 slugging percentage this season.
On the mound, Burke Eschmeyer has anchored the Post 320 pitching staff with 30 innings pitched and a 2.10 ERA. Behind the plate, catcher Colby Wit has been a steady defensive presence, leading the team with 102 total fielding chances.
Post 320 went far in the State Tournament last year, upsetting then-No. #1 seed Post 22 of Rapid City. They return a lot of production from that team, and will look to continue their strong start to the season on the road tonight.
The first pitch of game #1 is slated for 5:00 pm, with game #2 following at 7:30 pm. Fans can listen to both games on KDSJ 980 AM and 103.5 FM and watch on KDSJ-TV on YouTube. Coverage will begin at around 4:40 pm.
