The Sturgis City Council has approved updates to its municipal election rules.
Council members passed the second reading of a revised election ordinance Monday night, bringing city code in line with new South Dakota law.
The changes require cities to hold elections either in June, during the primary, or in November, with the general election. Under the new ordinance, Sturgis will hold its regular municipal elections in June.
City Attorney Eric Davis says the updates also address council leadership roles, vacancies, and special elections.
An effort to reintroduce a proposed runoff election policy was rejected, with alderman Mark Chaplin casting the only vote against the ordinance.
The measure now moves forward with the updated election guidelines in place.
