A dominant pitching effort paired with timely hitting lifted Spearfish Post 164 to an 8-0 shutout road victory over Belle Fourche Post 32 Broncs on Thursday at the Black Hills Roundup Sportsplex.
Spearfish relied on a trio of pitchers — Tucker Viessman, Carson Wood, and Cooper Chase — to keep Belle Fourche off the scoreboard. The group combined for a near-flawless outing, allowing just one hit while striking out six. Chase closed the door in the late innings, inducing a game-ending pop-out to first.
Post 164 wasted no time getting on the board, plating a run at the top of the first inning. Jack Scharf delivered an early RBI single as part of a three-hit frame that set the tone for the game.
Viessman started on the mound for Spearfish, and he earned the win after tossing two hitless innings, striking out two without issuing a walk. Wood then pitched in two more innings of no-run ball, and Chase closed out the game with a strong relief performance, allowing just one hit over three innings while striking out four.
Belle Fourche starter Tate Thomsen took the loss, working 5 1/3 innings. Thomsen allowed seven runs — though only two were earned — on eight hits while striking out two and walking four.
At the plate, Spearfish got balanced production throughout the lineup. Sean Sewell drove in two runs, while Bray Bowar led the team with two hits out of the No. 8 spot. Spearfish also showed patience at the plate, drawing six walks, with Connor Johnson and Scharf each earning two.
Thomsen accounted for Belle Fourche’s lone hit, finishing 1-for-3. The Broncs also turned a double play defensively.
Spearfish (Post 164) returns to action Friday with a road doubleheader against Pierre Post 8, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. and the second game to follow at 5:30 p.m. Fans can watch both games on KCCR Sports on YouTube, the streaming service for KDSJ’s sister station: KCCR 1240 AM, and 98.9 FM.
