Emergency crews responded Wednesday night to a rollover crash involving a side-by-side utility vehicle near Richmond Hill Road, where a driver was briefly trapped inside the wreckage.
The Lead Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 8:30 p.m. on June 17 following reports of a crash with possible entrapment and a leg injury. Limited cell phone coverage in the area complicated initial efforts to pinpoint the exact location, prompting firefighters to conduct a targeted search based on available information.
Responders located a single side-by-side vehicle that had rolled over with one occupant still inside. Fire crews used Hurst Jaws of Life cutters to remove the windshield, roof and part of the roll cage in order to safely free the patient.
Once extricated, the individual was assessed at the scene by Monument Health Northern Hills Ambulance personnel and later transported to Lead-Deadwood Monument Health Hospital for further treatment. The extent of the patient’s injuries was not immediately available.
Lead Volunteer Fire Department units Rescue 4 and Squad 7 responded to the incident. Additional assistance was provided by the Monument Health Northern Hills Ambulance and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
