Law enforcement officials reported a spike in impaired driving incidents over the weekend, arresting 10 drivers for driving under the influence between 8 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at 8 a.m. Monday, June 29.
Police say several of the arrests were tied to crashes, including incidents that caused property damage and raised concerns about public safety ahead of the busy Fourth of July holiday week.
DUI-related crashes
One of the most significant incidents occurred around 10:15 p.m. Thursday near 815 E. New York Street, where officers were dispatched after reports that a pickup truck had struck multiple objects, including two parked vehicles, a residence, and a road sign.
Responding officers located the heavily damaged truck in the 500 block of E. New York Street and identified the driver as 40-year-old Christopher Taylor of Rapid City. According to police, Taylor showed signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol.
Following an investigation, Taylor was arrested and charged with DUI, open container in a motor vehicle, driving under suspension, and three counts of hit and run.
In a separate incident just hours later, at approximately 1:45 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a reported collision at Catron Boulevard and Sheridan Lake Road. At the scene, police found debris scattered across the roadway and a downed street sign.
The involved vehicle was later located at a nearby address on Sheridan Lake Road. Police identified the driver as Colton Jordan and noted signs of alcohol impairment. Jordan was taken into custody and faces charges including DUI, hit and run, driving under suspension, and failure to surrender a suspended, revoked, or canceled license.
Later that day, around 1:05 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a rollover crash near Skyline Drive and Flormann Street. An SUV was found overturned, with all occupants already out of the vehicle.
Police determined the driver was a juvenile and reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol. The individual was detained and referred to the juvenile justice system.
Disturbance leads to a DUI arrest
Another arrest occurred Saturday afternoon following a disturbance call at a business located at 825 Jackson Boulevard.
Police were dispatched around 4:10 p.m. after receiving reports of an intoxicated man causing issues with customers and staff. According to authorities, the suspect left the area in a vehicle before returning to the parking lot.
Officers located the vehicle and identified the driver as Tan Tallon. Police reported Tallon displayed signs of impairment, including slurred speech and the smell of alcohol. He was arrested on charges of third-offense DUI, disorderly conduct and open container in a motor vehicle.
Holiday enforcement emphasis
The recent string of arrests comes as law enforcement agencies prepare for increased activity surrounding Fourth of July celebrations.
Officials noted that the week leading up to Independence Day is traditionally one of the busiest periods of the year for the Rapid City Police Department. Additional officers are scheduled to be on duty to manage the heightened call volume and to watch for impaired drivers.
Police are urging residents to plan ahead if alcohol will be part of their celebrations.
“Always designate a sober driver,” authorities emphasized in a statement, stressing that impaired driving remains a preventable threat to the community.
With multiple arrests and several crashes reported in just a four-day span, officers say the weekend’s incidents underscore the importance of responsible choices behind the wheel.
