A package of 10 new laws championed by Attorney General Marty Jackley goes into effect July 1, following approval by the Legislature and the signature of Gov. Larry Rhoden. Jackley says the measures are designed to boost public safety, strengthen government transparency and better protect South Dakotans from online crime, scams and illegal drugs.
The new laws include a ban on foreign political contributions, new penalties for AI‑generated intimate images, and protections for genetic data privacy. They also increase penalties for drug‑related crimes committed inside state prisons and update statutes to help investigators handle cases involving digital currency.
Another major component of the package adds new regulations on certain THC products for people under 21. The laws also make several changes to South Dakota’s open meetings requirements, including a rule that public meeting agendas must be posted online at least 72 hours in advance.
The bills — Senate Bills 17 and 41 through 49 — officially become law on Wednesday, July 1. As always, listeners should confirm legal details with trusted state sources.
