The City of Rapid City is conducting an extensive review of its computer systems following a cybersecurity incident that affected portions of Pennington County’s network over the weekend.
City officials say there is currently no indication that Rapid City systems have been compromised, but an investigation is underway because the City and County share some infrastructure and collaborate on a limited number of systems.
Information Technology Director Jim Gilbert says the review is a necessary step to ensure City data and networks remain secure.
As a result of the investigation and added security measures, several City services are experiencing disruptions. Those include the processing of utility payments and building permits.
Finance Officer Daniel Ainslie says utility payments can still be mailed or dropped off in person at the City Finance Office. In-person payments will be accepted, and customers will receive a receipt. However, online payment processing is currently unavailable.
City officials have not provided a timeline for completing the review but say they expect services to return to normal once the security assessment is finished.
Residents are encouraged to monitor City communications for updates as the investigation continues.
