More South Dakota families are choosing to spend summer closer to home, with tourism officials reporting increased interest in day trips, local festivals, and community events as families look for affordable ways to make summer memories.
Travel South Dakota says many visitors are opting for shorter trips and destinations within driving distance, with nearly 60 percent of travelers staying within 150 miles of home.
Organizers of events like the Brookings Summer Arts Festival say the trend has helped turn local attractions into vacation alternatives. The festival, now in its 55th year, draws families with art, live entertainment, food, and children’s activities.
AAA South Dakota says travelers still want to get away but are increasingly choosing road trips and budget-friendly experiences over longer, more expensive vacations.
Whether it’s a festival, a circus performance, or a day at a local lake, organizers say families are discovering that summer fun doesn’t always require traveling far from home.
