One of the Black Hills’ most popular summer traditions is marking a major milestone this weekend.
The 40th Annual Spearfish Canyon Half Marathon and 5K Run/Walk takes place Saturday, July 11, with both races beginning at 7 a.m.
The half-marathon starts near Savoy and follows the scenic Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway along Spearfish Creek before finishing at Spearfish City Park. Runners will travel through one of western South Dakota’s most picturesque landscapes, featuring towering limestone cliffs and forested canyon walls.
Half-marathon participants will receive finisher medals, and awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers, as well as winners across several age divisions.
A free shuttle service for half-marathon runners will leave Spearfish City Park beginning at 5:30 Saturday morning, with the final bus departing at 6:05.
The 5K Run/Walk also starts at 7 a.m. at Spearfish City Park. The course loops through the campground, connects with the bike path, and follows part of the scenic byway before returning to the park.
Packet pickup is scheduled for Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Northern Hills Area CASA in Spearfish, with race-day pickup beginning at 5:30 a.m.
The event also serves as a fundraiser and awareness opportunity for Northern Hills Area CASA, supporting local children in need. Online registration remains open through Friday evening, and participants can also register in person on race day.
