A catalytic converter has been identified as the cause of a fast-moving wildfire that damaged a home and forced evacuations in Rapid City Tuesday evening.
The fire was reported around 6:30 p.m. near West Flormann Street and Skyline Drive. According to the Rapid City Fire Department, the blaze spread rapidly through timber and grass, burning approximately 2-point-1 acres.
Fire officials say the flames threatened nearby homes, prompting evacuations as firefighters worked to contain the fire and prevent further spread. Emergency crews battled the blaze throughout the evening, and residents were asked to avoid the area.
One home sustained minor damage, but no injuries were reported.
Firefighters remained on scene Wednesday monitoring the burn area and extinguishing lingering hot spots. Officials say residents may continue to see light smoke as crews complete mop-up operations.
The Rapid City Fire Department says a catalytic converter sparked the fire, highlighting ongoing concerns about wildfire danger during the region’s hot and dry conditions.
