Drivers traveling to the 2026 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally should prepare for temporary traffic signals, reduced speed limits, and other traffic changes as thousands of visitors head to the Black Hills.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation says temporary traffic signals will be in place from July 31st through August 17th at several high-traffic intersections around Sturgis, Rapid City, and the Black Hills, including locations along Highways 34, 79, 44, and U.S. 385.
Beginning August 6, speed limits on Interstate 90 between Rapid City and Sturgis will be reduced from 75 miles per hour to 65. Additional speed reductions will be in effect on portions of Highway 34 and Highway 79 near popular rally venues and campgrounds.
SDDOT will also use message boards, speed trailers, and dynamic signs along I-90 to provide updates on traffic, weather, and crashes throughout the rally.
In addition, highway construction on U.S. 385 between Pactola Dam and Calumet Road will pause August 5th through 18th to improve traffic flow.
Officials say the temporary measures are designed to improve safety and keep traffic moving during one of South Dakota’s busiest travel periods.
