Meade County Sheriff Pat West is asking county commissioners to approve funding for two additional sheriff’s deputies as the county continues to grow.
West says Meade County’s population has increased from about 25,000 residents in 2010 to nearly 32,000 today. Along with that growth, the demand for law enforcement services has risen sharply.
According to the sheriff, calls for service have more than doubled over the past decade, climbing from roughly 9,100 calls in 2013 to about 21,000 calls this year.
West told commissioners the added positions are needed to keep pace with the increasing workload. Following the meeting, he also emphasized on social media that the request is not just about protecting the public, but also about ensuring the safety of deputies responding to calls across the county.
County commissioners are expected to consider the funding request as budget discussions continue.
