A proposed reconstruction project on U.S. Highway 85 in the northern Black Hills is drawing significant public attention as state officials seek to improve one of the region’s most scenic, and crash-prone, roadways.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation plans to rebuild a 16-mile stretch of Highway 85 between the Wyoming border and Cheyenne Crossing. The 47-million-dollar project would widen travel lanes, add paved shoulders, improve roadside clear zones, and make adjustments to several curves.
Transportation officials say the road is in poor condition and needs major upgrades. According to the state, 77 crashes were recorded on the corridor between 2020 and 2024, resulting in one death and 31 injuries. Officials say the crash rate is more than six times higher than the statewide average for similar roads.
The project has sparked concern from some residents and Black Hills preservation advocates, who worry widening the highway could affect the character of Spearfish Canyon and nearby natural areas.
State officials say they’re working to balance safety improvements with protecting the area’s scenic beauty and are continuing to review public feedback.
The public comment period on the proposed Highway 85 project has been extended through September 4th.
