Governor Larry Rhoden has appointed six additional members to the South Dakota Defense Institute board, completing the organization’s nine-member voting board.
The South Dakota Defense Institute was created as a nonprofit organization aimed at strengthening the state’s role in the nation’s defense industry by connecting businesses, government agencies, and educational institutions.
In announcing the appointments, Governor Rhoden said the institute will help keep South Dakota and America strong while creating new opportunities for businesses and economic growth across the state.
The newly appointed board members include Scott Erickson of American Bank & Trust, Rob Hrabe of VRC Metal Systems, Jim Nelson of Aerostar, Robb Peterson of Glacial Lakes Rubber and Plastics, Dr. Brian Tande of South Dakota Mines, and Jack Valentine of Elevate Rapid City.
Several of the appointees represent western South Dakota organizations, including Rapid City-based VRC Metal Systems, South Dakota Mines, and Elevate Rapid City.
The board has also approved three non-voting members from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, the South Dakota National Guard, and the Ellsworth Development Authority.
State officials say the institute will focus on expanding defense-related business opportunities, workforce development, research partnerships, and investment throughout South Dakota.
