A vehicle towing a camper was destroyed by fire over the weekend on Highway 79, but all occupants were able to escape safely.
According to the Fairburn Fire Department, a family returning home from a weekend getaway at Angostura Reservoir noticed smoke coming from under the hood of their vehicle while traveling on the highway.
Fairburn Fire units were dispatched to the scene, with Fairburn 625 and Brush 3 arriving first and quickly bringing the fire under control. Additional responders, including Fairburn Brush 22 and 624, responded directly from the Custer County Fair to assist.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the vehicle was destroyed.
No injuries were reported, as everyone inside the vehicle got out safely before the fire spread.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Custer County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control while crews worked at the scene.
The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
