The future of the Job Corps training center near Nemo appears secure after Congress approved funding for the federal workforce development program and a court settlement helped protect centers from proposed closures.
The Boxelder Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center, which serves students from across the region, provides education, job training, housing, meals, and health care for qualifying young adults.
Earlier concerns about the program’s future arose after the federal government proposed eliminating funding and closing Job Corps centers nationwide. However, Congress restored funding through mid-2027, and a recent lawsuit settlement halted plans to shut down many centers.
The Nemo facility currently trains students in fields including nursing assistance, welding, carpentry, culinary arts, and wildfire firefighting. Students from the center have also assisted with wildfire response efforts in South Dakota and other states.
Officials at the center say enrollment and training programs remain strong, and supporters believe congressional backing will help ensure the program’s long-term future.
