Sturgis Police say this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was a successful event, with overall enforcement numbers remaining steady or declining in several key categories.
Police Chief Geody Vandewater says compliance with city and state laws appeared strong throughout the 86th annual rally, contributing to what officials consider a smooth and safe event.
One area that saw an increase was underage drinking citations. Police say bar owners and security personnel played a key role in identifying underage drinkers and helping enforce alcohol laws.
Illegal parking continued to be a common issue during the rally, although officials say parking violations were down compared to previous years.
Through Saturday, Sturgis Police responded to more than 1,500 calls for service. Officers made 192 non-traffic arrests and 176 traffic-related arrests; both increases from last year. A total of 128 people were booked into the Meade County Jail during the rally.
Final rally statistics are still being compiled.
