A coalition of states, including South Dakota, will begin presenting its case against Meta this week in a federal trial focused on the impact of Facebook and Instagram on children and teenagers.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says the lawsuit alleges Meta designed features that encourage compulsive use among young users while misleading parents and the public about potential risks.
The states also claim Meta collected personal information from children under the age of 13 without parental consent, potentially violating federal privacy laws.
Opening statements are scheduled for Tuesday in federal court in California. The trial is expected to last between six and eight weeks.
The coalition is asking the court to order Meta to change its business practices, comply with consumer protection laws, and pay financial penalties if violations are proven.
South Dakota is among more than two dozen states participating in the lawsuit.
