Authorities Warn Residents About Gift Card Scam Using Fake Law Enforcement Calls

 Police are warning residents to be on alert for a scam involving callers posing as law enforcement officers and demanding money.

Authorities say an unknown individual has been contacting people in the community, claiming to be Detective Brooks with either the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office or the Lead Police Department. The caller tells victims that they or a family member has an active warrant and must pay a fee immediately to avoid legal trouble.

Officials emphasize that neither the sheriff’s office nor the police department collects warrant fees over the phone, and law enforcement agencies will never request payment using gift cards.

Residents who receive one of these calls are urged not to provide any personal information or money and to report the incident to local authorities right away.
