STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council has approved the low bid for a major street improvement project on Otter Road and Raccoon Road, with construction expected to begin shortly after Labor Day.
Public Works Director Rick Bush says the project is designed to provide a full rehabilitation of the roadway rather than simply adding a new layer of asphalt. Plans call for full-depth reclamation of the existing pavement, roadbed preparation, possible installation of a geo-grid for added stability, and the placement of roughly three inches of new asphalt.
The work will also include curb, gutter, and valley gutter improvements, along with new pavement markings. In total, the project covers about 8,700 square yards of roadway and will use an estimated 1,500 tons of new asphalt.
Construction will be completed in phases to maintain access for residents and property owners along Otter Road between Raccoon Road and Pine Tree Trail.
Woelber Excavating submitted the winning bid, totaling just over $902,000 for both phases of the project. Bush says the bid came in well below the engineer’s original cost estimate.
Work is expected to get underway immediately after the Labor Day holiday.
