BUFFALO, S.D. – A powerful summer storm brought hurricane-force winds to Harding County Sunday night, causing widespread damage in Buffalo and leaving residents dealing with downed trees, power outages and blocked roads.
The National Weather Service reported wind speeds reaching 100 miles per hour in Buffalo, with gusts up to 87 miles per hour recorded near Ludlow. Emergency officials are urging residents to use caution around debris and downed power lines.
Despite significant damage to trees, vehicles and other property, no injuries have been reported. Officials say homes escaped major structural damage, although some sustained broken windows and roof shingle damage.
Cleanup efforts began quickly, with local businesses and volunteers helping remove fallen trees and clear roads throughout the community. Crews worked to restore access to homes and prepare the town for upcoming homecoming and Labor Day events.
Local officials say the response has showcased the strong community spirit of Buffalo, with neighbors working together to recover from the storm.
