SPEARFISH, S.D. – Bicycles and e-bikes could soon become more accessible in national parks under a new proposal from the National Park Service.
The proposed rule would streamline the process for allowing bicycle access and give park managers greater flexibility to open roads, parking areas and trails to riders. Officials say the change would reduce administrative requirements while creating a more consistent approach to bicycle and e-bike use across the national park system.
The proposal follows federal efforts aimed at expanding recreational access on public lands and reducing regulations.
No specific changes have been announced for individual parks at this time. Instead, the proposal would provide park managers with additional options when considering future access.
The National Park Service will accept public comments on the proposal for 60 days before deciding whether to finalize the rule.
