RAPID CITY, S.D. – Law enforcement agencies across Pennington County are increasing patrols this Labor Day weekend as thousands of visitors head to the Black Hills for one last summer getaway.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, and South Dakota Highway Patrol are working together to monitor highways, tourist destinations, and popular lakes and recreation areas expected to see heavy traffic.
Officials say enforcement efforts will focus on speeding, seatbelt violations, and impaired driving in an effort to keep roads safe during the holiday weekend.
Lieutenant Thad Mason of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers to make a plan before consuming alcohol, noting that even if someone feels okay to drive, their blood alcohol level and reaction time may still be impaired.
Authorities are encouraging anyone who plans to drink to arrange a sober driver or secure a ride home ahead of time.
While specific patrol locations will not be disclosed, officials say drivers should expect a visible law enforcement presence throughout the Black Hills during the final holiday weekend of the summer.
