DEADWOOD, S.D. – A 20-year-old Minnesota man is facing attempted murder and aggravated assault charges following a stabbing in downtown Deadwood early Sunday morning.
Deadwood Police say officers responded to the 300 block of Main Street just after 2 a.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a stabbing. Investigators say the suspect fled the scene but was later located and taken into custody near Whitewood Creek.
Police identified the suspect as Preston Wolowicz of Minnesota. Authorities say Wolowicz was involved in a fight with a 44-year-old Minnesota man in a parking lot before the stabbing occurred.
The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Wolowicz was booked into the Lawrence County Jail and formally charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Police believe the incident was isolated and say there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Deadwood Police Department.
