NEWELL, S.D. – Three people were hospitalized after an accidental shooting Saturday night west of Newell.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office says deputies and emergency responders were called to a rural residence, where they found several people at the scene. Authorities say everyone involved knew each other, and three individuals suffered gunshot wounds.
All three victims were transported to Monument Health Sturgis for treatment. Officials have not released their names, ages, or conditions out of respect for the victims and their families.
Sheriff Fred Lamphere says the incident remains under investigation, but there is no ongoing threat to the public.
In a statement, Lamphere called the shooting a tragic incident and reminded the public of the importance of practicing proper firearm safety at all times.
