SPEARFISH, S.D. – Fire officials say the Lookout Fire near Spearfish is now fully contained and controlled after burning 444 acres.
The fire began September 7 after a hay truck caught fire along Interstate 90 and reignited the following day. At its peak, the response included nearly 150 personnel from local, state and federal agencies, along with a Type 1 helicopter, four large air tankers and a very large air tanker.
The fire was contained Sunday around noon, and officials declared it controlled Monday morning, releasing all remaining resources from the incident.
Meanwhile, crews responded to several new fires Monday. The Lexington Fire east of Deadwood and the Spruce Fire southeast of Deadwood were both reported Monday morning and quickly contained at about a tenth of an acre each.
Another fire, the Spearfish Peak Fire on the north side of Spearfish Peak, was reported around 6 a.m. Monday and grew to about a quarter acre. Officials continue to monitor that incident.
