PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Secretary of State Monae Johnson is crossing party lines in this year’s race for her successor.
Johnson, a Republican, announced Saturday that she is endorsing Democratic candidate Terrence Davis for Secretary of State. In a personal statement, Johnson said her decision is based on her experience working in the office for more than a decade, first as an employee and later as Secretary of State.
Johnson acknowledged the endorsement may upset some members of her party, but said voters should look beyond political labels and focus on each candidate’s qualifications, experience and plans for the office.
Davis called the endorsement significant because it comes from someone with extensive knowledge of the position, despite their differences in political affiliation. He said he is grateful for Johnson’s support and intends to earn the trust she has placed in him.
The endorsement comes as South Dakota voters prepare to choose a new Secretary of State in this year’s election.
