SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Spearfish Spartans scored nine touchdowns before halftime Friday night and cruised to a 66-7 win over Douglas in Spearfish.
The Spartans built a 59-0 lead at the break, getting contributions on offense, defense, and special teams. Graham Hughes opened the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run and finished the night with 161 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries.
Quarterback Thomas Hughes was efficient, completing all five of his passes for 130 yards and a touchdown while adding two rushing scores. One of those touchdown passes went 27 yards to Kade Vavruska, who hauled in three catches for 100 yards and repeatedly provided strong field position with punt returns of 29, 46 and 23 yards.
Spearfish also scored on defense when Sander returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown, and on special teams when Karsen Seyer broke free for a 50-yard punt return score.
Owynn Meredith added a rushing touchdown and later connected with Asher Olson on a 19-yard touchdown pass in the second half. Brody McCann recorded an interception, while the Spartan defense totaled several tackles for loss, led by Moser with two.
The victory improves Spearfish to 3-and-1 on the season and marks the Spartans’ third consecutive win after opening the year with a loss at Watertown. Spearfish will travel to Brookings next Friday to face the Bobcats on KDSJ 980 AM, 103.5 FM, kdsj980.com, and streaming on KDSJ-TV on YouTube and on Facebook.
