RAPID CITY, S.D. – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has joined attorneys general from 44 other states and territories in urging Congress to fully fund security requests for the U.S. Supreme Court in fiscal year 2027.
In a letter to congressional leaders, the coalition cited growing threats against federal judges and their families and called for additional resources to protect Supreme Court justices.
The court’s budget request includes nearly $14.6 million to expand personal security and add protection personnel, along with $2 million for an off-site command center to help coordinate security efforts at justices’ homes.
According to the federal judiciary, more than 800 incidents involving threats, violence, or other serious concerns targeting federal judges were reported during fiscal year 2025.
Jackley says protecting Supreme Court justices, judges, and other public officials should remain a top priority as threats against members of the judiciary continue to increase.
