LEAD, S.D. – The Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead is receiving unprecedented global attention following a potential dark matter discovery announced by the LUX-ZEPLIN, or LZ, collaboration.
SURF officials say the announcement generated more than 1,000 media mentions and reached an estimated audience of 5.5 billion people worldwide in just the first week. Coverage came from major international news organizations, including the New York Times, BBC, CBS, and Reuters.
Researchers have described the finding as an “interesting event” and the first unique occurrence detected since the experiment began operating in 2021. Scientists are continuing to analyze more than a year’s worth of remaining data to determine whether similar events exist.
SURF officials say media interest in the facility has surged this year, with total audience reach climbing to more than 12.6 billion. Researchers hope the discovery could eventually lead to an extension of the LZ experiment beyond its currently planned 2028 conclusion.
