MITCHELL, S.D. — The Spearfish Spartans volleyball team endured a tough day on the road Saturday, falling to Mitchell and Tea in a pair of matches to extend their losing streak to three.
In the opener, Spearfish battled throughout but dropped a 3-1 decision to Mitchell. The Spartans remained competitive in every set, with scores of 25-17, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-17.
Julia Billington led the way with a standout all-around performance, recording 17 kills, five aces, four digs and three solo blocks. Despite the effort, Mitchell secured the victory and handed Spearfish its second consecutive loss.
Later in the day, the Spartans were swept 3-0 by Tea. Billington and Addison Keller paced the offense with seven kills each, while Megan Markovetz dished out 10 assists. Piper Jacobs and Caitlin Lyon each added two service aces.
The two losses dropped Spearfish to 8-13 overall and marked the Spartans’ third straight defeat. Spearfish has now lost three of its last four road matches.
The Spartans will look to get back on track Tuesday night when they return home against Sturgis Brown Lady Scoopers on KDSJ Radio, kdsj980.com, and streaming on KDSJ-TV.
