RAPID CITY, S.D. – The U.S. Forest Service is planning a prescribed burn in the southern Black Hills this week as part of ongoing efforts to reduce wildfire danger and improve wildlife habitat.
The Schenk prescribed fire is scheduled for Thursday, October 8th, weather and fuel conditions permitting. The burn will cover approximately 1,220 acres about five miles southwest of Jewel Cave.
The project involves land managed by the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and private landowners. Officials say the burn will only move forward if conditions are safe and favorable.
Residents in nearby communities may see smoke during the operation, although fire managers expect smoke levels to decrease during the evening hours. Crews will continue monitoring the area until the fire is completely extinguished.
At this time, no road or forest closures are planned, but temporary closures could be put in place if needed for public safety. Warning signs will be posted along nearby Forest Service roads.
Drivers are advised to slow down and use their headlights if they encounter smoke on area roadways.
The Forest Service is also asking the public not to report the prescribed burn, as fire personnel will be on site throughout the operation and follow-up patrols.
