STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis homeowners could see a modest increase in the city portion of their property tax bills next year following action by the City Council.
Council members approved the city’s 2027 property tax request Monday night, adopting the maximum levy allowed under state law. The estimated tax rate is set at 4 dollars and 23 cents per one thousand dollars of taxable property value.
The city’s total property tax request is just over 3.35 million dollars, an increase of about 4.5 percent from the city’s base property tax amount.
For a home with a taxable value of 300-thousand dollars, the city portion of the tax bill would be approximately 1,269 dollars per year, or about 106 dollars per month. That’s an increase of roughly 55 dollars annually, or about 4 dollars and 55 cents per month, compared to the base levy calculation.
City officials say the increase reflects growth in property values, inflation, and previously unused taxing authority allowed under state law.
The revenue will help fund city services and day-to-day municipal operations in 2027. According to the Meade County Auditor, Sturgis’ total taxable value, including utilities, now stands at nearly 794.5 million dollars.
