SPEARFISH/HARRISBURG – The Spearfish boys soccer team is headed to the Class AA state quarterfinals after a 1-0 playoff victory over Sioux Falls Roosevelt Tuesday night, while the Spartans girls saw their season come to an end against defending state champion Harrisburg.
Junior Evan Duncan delivered the game-winner with about a minute remaining, breaking a scoreless tie and lifting seventh-seeded Spearfish past 10th-seeded Roosevelt at the Black Hills Energy Sports Complex. The Spartans’ defense made the lead stand up, recording the shutout and improving to 10-2-3 in head coach Anthony Bradley’s first season. Spearfish, unbeaten since August 29, advances to face second-seeded Watertown in the Class AA quarterfinals Saturday.
On the girls’ side, 15th-seeded Spearfish fell 10-0 to second-seeded Harrisburg in the opening round of the playoffs. The Tigers, winners of four straight Class AA state championships, remained unbeaten at 13-0-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals.
The loss ends the Spartans’ season at 5-10 and closes the first year under head coach Brianna Warnemunde.
