RAPID CITY, S.D. – An 18-year-old Rapid City man is facing multiple charges after police say he pointed an AR-15-style rifle at another motorist, led officers on a pursuit, and was later arrested following reports of gunfire.
According to the Rapid City Police Department, officers were called Tuesday evening after receiving reports that a passenger in a vehicle had allegedly pointed a rifle at another driver and followed the vehicle. Police later located the suspect vehicle near East Boulevard and St. Joseph Street and attempted a traffic stop.
Authorities say the driver initially exited the vehicle, but the passenger, later identified as Riley Youngman, moved into the driver’s seat and fled. During the pursuit, the vehicle reportedly struck several construction barricades on Creek Drive before traveling toward East Highway 44. Officers later located the vehicle abandoned.
Several hours later, shortly after midnight Wednesday, police responded to reports of gunshots in the 200 block of Bald Eagle Lane. Witnesses told officers they saw a man carrying an AR-15-style rifle in the area.
When officers arrived, police say the suspect ran into an apartment building. A perimeter was established, and officers observed the man jump from a third-floor balcony to a second-floor balcony. After entering the building, officers found Youngman hiding behind an air-conditioning unit and took him into custody without further incident.
Investigators recovered the rifle and determined it did not have the required serial number. Witnesses also identified Youngman as the passenger involved in the earlier incident and pursuit.
Youngman was booked into the Pennington County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault, second-degree eluding, second-degree vandalism, and an outstanding warrant. The case remains under investigation.
