SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A Minnehaha County Sheriff’s deputy remains in critical condition following an officer-involved shooting Friday night in southwest Sioux Falls.
Authorities say deputies responded to the 2900 block of South Keyrell Drive around 7:30 p.m. About 30 minutes later, gunfire erupted, leaving both a deputy and the suspect wounded.
The suspect, 39-year-old Brandon Oetken, was taken to a hospital for treatment and is now facing three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
Sheriff Mike Milstead said the shooting has had a significant impact on the deputy’s family, the law enforcement community and the public. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says the Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
Officials say evidence is being reviewed, and a detailed report on the shooting is expected within 30 days. The deputy’s identity has not been released.
