SHERIDAN, WYO. – Fire officials say progress continues on the PK Fire burning in Sheridan County, with the wildfire now estimated at 1,645 acres and 85% contained.
The fire, located between the Beckton and Wolf communities, has been burning since last Friday. Sheridan County Fire Warden Chris Thomas said the blaze continues to consume cottonwood trees, which can fall without warning and create dangerous conditions for firefighters.
Because of that risk, officials have decided not to place crews directly in the affected areas and instead plan to allow the remaining fire activity to burn out naturally while continuing containment efforts around the perimeter.
Evacuation warnings that were issued over the weekend have since been reduced. Officials say recent moisture and firefighting efforts have significantly lowered the threat to nearby residents and property.
Authorities will continue monitoring the fire and increasing containment until the blaze is fully extinguished.
