DEADWOOD, S.D. – Lawrence County commissioners have voted to lift the county’s 2026 burn ban, allowing open burning to resume in most unincorporated areas of the county.
The action removes restrictions on open burning outside city limits and on state and federal lands. However, officials noted that Amended Ordinance No. 2025-01 remains in effect, continuing restrictions on open burning in areas north of Interstate 90.
County officials say residents should review the ordinance and follow all applicable regulations before conducting any open burns. Questions about the ordinance can be directed to the Lawrence County Office of Emergency Management.
For residents south of Interstate 90 within the Black Hills Fire Protection District, burn permit questions should be directed to the South Dakota Wildland Fire Office in Lead.
Officials are reminding residents to use caution with any outdoor burning and stay informed about current fire conditions and local regulations.
