RAPID CITY, S.D. – The longtime rivalry between South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State University is extending beyond the football field this week through the annual Black Hills Blitz fundraising campaign.
The weeklong challenge, held in conjunction with the Black Hills Brawl football game, encourages alumni, fans, families, and community supporters to donate to athletics programs at their respective universities. The goal is to generate support for student-athletes while competing for donor-count bragging rights.
This year’s Blitz Week runs through Oct. 18, leading up to the Black Hills Brawl matchup Saturday evening at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City.
Officials say donations help provide scholarships, equipment, uniforms, meals, and other resources that support student-athletes both on the field and in the classroom.
South Dakota Mines Athletic Director David Crum said the campaign is an opportunity for supporters to invest in student success while adding another layer to one of western South Dakota’s most storied collegiate rivalries.
More than 300 student-athletes compete in varsity sports at South Dakota Mines, and school officials say donor support helps ensure those students have the resources needed to balance academics and athletics.
While the football game will ultimately decide bragging rights on the field, supporters of both schools are competing throughout the week to see which university can attract the most donors.
