DEADWOOD, S.D. – The City of Deadwood is receiving national recognition for its efforts to preserve local history.
Deadwood’s Historic Preservation Commission has officially been certified by the National Park Service as part of the Certified Local Government Program, making it the newest South Dakota community to earn the designation.
The program promotes cooperation between federal, state, and local governments to protect historic sites and resources. Certification gives communities access to additional preservation tools, including the ability to review National Register nominations, receive technical assistance and apply for grants for historic preservation projects.
Deadwood Planning, Zoning and Historic Preservation Officer Kevin Kuchenbecker says the city is honored to receive the certification and values its partnership with the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office.
Officials say the designation reinforces Deadwood’s long-standing commitment to protecting and promoting the community’s historic character.
