RAPID CITY, S.D. – As Domestic Violence Awareness Month continues this October, advocates across western South Dakota are encouraging victims to seek help and communities to recognize the warning signs of abuse.
Experts say domestic violence is about power and control and often goes beyond physical violence. Many survivors experience emotional abuse, financial control, stalking, and online harassment.
Advocates note that abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender, and say tight-knit rural and tribal communities can present additional challenges for those trying to leave unsafe relationships.
The opening of a new shelter in Porcupine on the Pine Ridge Reservation marks a step forward in expanding support services for survivors in tribal communities.
Anyone experiencing domestic violence or concerned about a loved one is encouraged to contact local crisis services or the National Domestic Violence Hotline for free, confidential support available 24 hours a day.
