SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Spearfish Police Department is encouraging residents to clean out their medicine cabinets and safely dispose of unused or expired medications as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
The nationwide effort, coordinated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement agencies, aims to prevent prescription drugs from falling into the wrong hands and reduce the risk of misuse, addiction, and accidental poisoning.
Spearfish Police Chief Collin Smith says unused medications can pose serious dangers if they are stolen, abused, or accidentally consumed by children or pets. He also reminds residents not to flush medications unless specifically directed, because drugs can negatively impact the environment and water supply.
Since the program began, law enforcement agencies across the country have collected more than 10,500 tons of unused medications for safe disposal.
Residents can drop off expired or unwanted prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, pet medicines, and vitamin supplements at the Spearfish Police Department on West Illinois Street. A secure disposal box is available outside the lobby 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and all submissions are anonymous.
Officials note that syringes and other sharps should not be placed in the collection box. All medications collected will be destroyed in accordance with DEA and state guidelines.
